For every bucket of sand a man hauls, the wind brings another.
For every life that wanders out of sight, one more is born.
On the anniversary of a father lost, two brothers whisper stories in a tent.
They camp on the border of No Man's Land.
And one of them has a secret.

Sand Part 2 Out of No Man Land eBook Hugh Howey

NOTE - same review for all parts, considering them as one book

As the title says, the book was good and I enjoyed it, but it didn't quite live up to what I'd come to expect after having read the WOOL series. I'm not sure if it was because there was too many narrators for me to become attached to any, or if it was a general failing of the story. Unlike the WOOL series, I was never 'chomping at the bit' to get back to reading it, never pushing myself to stay up later to read "just one more chapter". Certain things were never explained that I would have liked to have had more information on, other things simply used the "magical sci-fi hand wave" to justify / explain away.

Sand Part 2 Out of No Man Land eBook Hugh Howey Reviews

As fast as you can suck air, this book keeps you on the edge. How does one live in all this sand, dirt, gravel? Dad splits, brother
involved in a dive gone wrong, sister gone, mother a prostitute....Who leaves the city next? Who is ABLE to leave? Some leave not of their own hand. Damaged people wandering about, children put to work in order to survive. Dive into this series...hopefully you will make it out alive.
Great unforeseen developments on the first story and a great open ending.

Mr. Howey really understands the worlds and the engineering requirements that make his stories tick. His is "hard" science fiction, and yet the stories are so compelling on a human level. He's destined for greatness, I'm convinced. Obviously, you should read "Sand, Part 1" first. And also read Mr. Howey's blockbuster, the Wool series. And read "The Plagiarist."
Sand Part 2 shows us the life of (Part 1) Palmer's younger brother Conner, who is now responsible for his 11 year old brother Rob. Much of the story leads up to the annual camping trip, a time when the remaining family members honor their father. Hugh Howey does an outstanding job of describing the world of sand. I feel like I'm right there with the characters, wanting to get the grit out of my teeth, kick the scrum off my boots, and drink a capful of water. I can't wait for the next part of the story, and to find out what all the racket is out east, past the giant scar in the earth.
The ending didn't relate to the first Part 1, so I got a bit confused. So I ordered the 'Return to Danvar'. I know it has been posted somewhere that one should wait until all has been assembled in an omnibus ... but that is like telling a kid to wait until momma fills the cookie jar before you take a cookie.

Read all of HH books and love them all. This one has a bit of a similarity to me from a previous story of his I have read, so I wonder if I've already guessed the ending.

No one can build a world so intriguing and mysterious as Mr. Howey, and I have to look forward to the next one.
Sand is full of amusing parallels to Wool (Hugh Howey's popular earlier series, which you've read and is the reason you are considering reading this) - buried sky scrapers (not unlike a silo, no?), claustrophobia, post apocalyptic environment, 4-letter title, etc. But the setting is not really anything like Wool, it almost seems like those parallels are intentional Easter eggs.

Another characteristic this series shares with Wool (and the TV show Lost) is the slow reveal. The environment and characters are very slowly revealed, and every mystery gives way to ten more. You'll think you're finally going to learn the truth about... nope, nevermind, more mysteries. I'm just hoping that underneath it all is a slightly better back story than either Wool or Lost.

Anyway, it's a fun read. Certainly worth the price of admission.
Hugh Howey's post apocalypse stories have become quite popular. I've read two of them now, including this one and I have to say that I am impressed. Though I'm sure there are plenty of positive reviews to choose from, what might make my experience with them somewhat different is the fact I started with book two of sand, bypassing one entirely. Why? Accident. So what did I think?

Well book two is written so well that I had no problem getting into the story, the characters and the world having missed out on whatever explanation or descriptions book one included. Granted these are relatively short books and probably are meant to be read together, but I have to applaud this author for managing to write something so well that you can jump in to it skipping the start and still enjoy it immensely.

You probably don't need to hear it from me, but you should read these books.
So Hugh Howey takes us into a completely different world and proceeds to suck us in completely. He comes out with a recommendation on Part 1 saying to just wait a few weeks for the full novel...ya right...not happening, Hugh!

The first installment of Sand basically served to familiarize us with the weird world of Sand. Now in Part 2, the details begin to fill in and the plot is thickened greatly. Without revealing any potential spoilers, this second book is really focused on the human side of living within the world of Sand. I didn't do a word count, but this book felt much longer and fuller than the first. Its starting to look to me as if Hugh is going to follow a similar path to what he used in the original serial release of Wool with each successive part longer and more detailed than its predecessor.

A final comment regarding this book It is a classic serial. Each installment is not the complete story, but rather a well-defined, focused piece of a bigger story. It will leave you with more questions than answers. Expect it to end with a cliff-hanger (not necessarily an actual person hanging off a cliff...but with Hugh you never know). A good serial should have you begging for the next installment the second you finish the last sentence and then it should make you wait a week or two for the next part. "Sand" is definitely a good serial!
